    Opened in 1869 This gothic sandstone octagonal pavilion of open arches is understood to be unique in Australia.

    It was the terminus for receiving the dead of Sydney's expanding population and an insight into the Victorian treatment of death.

    I've heard it said and believed it was designed by Australia's first architect but the State Government Heritage Statement attributes it to Colonial Architect James Barnet.
